The Surrender Novena
Trusting God in Daily Surrender:
A Journey to rest in His love
Ava Adams
Surrender is a word that can feel heavy,
especially in a world that glorifies self-reliance and control.
Yet, when it comes to our relationship with God,
surrender is not about giving up;
it’s about giving in
— to His love, His plans, and His promises.
Trusting God in daily surrender is
a beautiful yet challenging act of faith.
It’s not something that comes naturally to most of us.
We like to think we have things under
control, but let’s be honest
— life has a way of reminding us
just how little control we actually have.
That’s where trusting God comes in.
Proverbs 3:5-6 speaks directly to this: “
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on
your own understanding;
n all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.”
Trusting God is not blind faith;
it’s choosing to believe in His character and His Word,
even when life feels uncertain.
Why Surrender Feels So Hard
Let’s face it
— surrender doesn’t come easily to us. Why?
Because surrender feels like losing control,
and if there’s one thing we love, it’s control.
We cling to our plans, our timelines, and
our understanding of how things should work.
But here’s the thing: our understanding is limited,
while God’s wisdom is infinite.
Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher
than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
For many of us, fear is a major barrier to surrender.
We’re afraid of the unknown,
afraid of letting go, and sometimes
even afraid of what God might ask us to do.
Add to that the baggage of past hurts and disappointments,
and surrender starts to feel like an impossible task.
But here’s the truth:
God is not asking us to surrender because
He wants to take something away from us.
He’s asking us to surrender
so He can give us something better
— peace, joy, and the freedom that comes from trusting Him fully.
The Rest We Find in God’s Love
There’s a kind of rest that only comes when we stop striving
and start trusting.
Jesus invites us into this rest in
Matthew 11:28-30:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is
light.”
This isn’t the kind of rest you get from a good night’s sleep
or a relaxing vacation. It’s deeper.
It’s the rest of knowing t
hat you’re not carrying the weight of the world
on your shoulders.
It’s the peace of knowing that God has a plan for your life,
and He’s in control
— even when things feel chaotic.
Resting in God’s love doesn’t mean your problems
will magically disappear,
but it does mean you don’t have to face them alone.
Taking the First Step: Practical Ways to Surrender
Surrendering to God might feel like an abstract concept,
but it’s something we can practice daily.
Start small. Begin your day with a simple prayer:
“God, I give this day to You. Guide my
steps, and help me trust You in everything.”
Prayer is a powerful way to remind ourselves
that we’re not in this alone.
Philippians 4:6 encourages us:
“Do not be anxious about anything,
but in every situation, by
prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God.”
Another way to surrender is by immersing yourself in Scripture.
God’s Word is full of promises
that remind us of His faithfulness.
One of my favorites is
Psalm 46:10:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
That’s a verse I come back to often when I feel overwhelmed.
Worship is another powerful tool for surrender.
When we worship, we shift our focus
from our problems to God’s greatness.
Songs like “I Surrender All” or “Oceans” have a way
of softening our hearts and reminding us who’s really in charge.
Gratitude also plays a big role
in surrender. When we take the time to thank God
for what He’s already done in our lives,
it becomes easier to trust Him with what’s ahead.
Learning from Biblical Examples of Surrender
The Bible is filled with stories of people who trusted God
and surrendered to His plans, even when it was hard.
Take Abraham, for example.
God asked him to sacrifice his son Isaac
— a request that must have felt impossible.
But Abraham trusted God’s promise and obeyed, and
God provided a ram in Isaac’s place (Genesis 22).
Then there’s Job. Talk about someone who had every reason
to give up on God. Job lost everything
— his wealth, his health, and his family.
Yet, in the midst of his suffering, he
declared:
“Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him”
(Job 13:15).
Job’s story reminds us
that surrender doesn’t mean life will be easy,
but it does mean we can trust God
to bring us through even the darkest times.
And let’s not forget Mary, the mother of Jesus.
When the angel told her she would give birth
to the Savior of the world,
her response was simple yet profound:
“I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled”
(Luke 1:38).
Mary’s surrender wasn’t passive; it was a bold
act of trust in God’s plan.
The Rewards of Letting Go
When we finally let go and surrender to God,
we experience a kind of freedom that’s hard to
put into words.
Isaiah 26:3 says:
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are
steadfast, because they trust in you.”
That peace is one of the greatest gifts of surrender.
It’s the assurance that no matter what happens,
God is with us, guiding us every step of the way.
Surrender also brings clarity and direction.
Psalm 32:8 promises:
“I will instruct you and
teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
” When westop trying to figure everything out on our own,
we create space for God to show us the way.
And then there’s strength.
Philippians 4:13 reminds us:
“I can do all this through him who
gives me strength".
Surrender doesn’t mean we stop trying; it means we stop striving in our
own power and start relying on His.
When Surrender Feels Like a Struggle
Let’s be real
—there will be days when surrender
feels like the hardest thing in the world.
Maybe you’re facing a situation
that seems hopeless, or maybe you’ve been
hurt so many
times that trusting anyone, even God, feels impossible.
On those days, remember that God
isn’t asking you to have it all together.
He’s just asking you to take the next step.
James 1:2-4 offers encouragement:
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,
whenever you face trials of many kinds,
because you know that the testing of your faith
produces perseverance."
God uses our struggles to shape us,
just like a potter shapes clay.
t’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.
And the good news is,
you don’t have to do it alone.
Surround yourself with people who will pray for you,
encourage you, and remind you of God’s faithfulness
when you’re feeling weak.
Living a Life of Daily Surrender
Surrendering to God isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily choice.
Every morning, we have the opportunity to say,
“God, I trust You.
I don’t know what today holds,
but I know You’re holding me.”
Romans 12:1 captures this beautifully:
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters,
in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,
holy and pleasing to God
— this is your true and proper worship.”
Some days will be easier than others,
but the more we practice surrender,
the more natural it becomes.
Over time, we start to see the fruit of trusting God
— peace, joy, and a deeper sense of His presence in our lives.
Conclusion
Trusting God in daily surrender is not about perfection;
it’s about progress. It’s about learning
to let go of the things we can’t control
and resting in the assurance
that God’s plans are always good.
As Psalm 28:7 reminds us:
“The Lord is my strength and my shield;
my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.”
If surrender feels hard for you right now, take heart
— you’re not alone.
Every believer struggles with this at some point,
but God’s grace is sufficient.
Keep coming back to Him,
day by day, moment by moment.
And as you do, you’ll discover
the incredible peace and
freedom that come
from resting in His love.
